Fatimah’s History

Fatimah’s History

I am one of twenty siblings. I know it’s not very common for people to have that many siblings. However, it wasn’t that uncommon in Saudi Arabia around the time my parents got married. My father’s name is Mahumud, as you might’ve already guessed. My mother, Aminah, bore my father seven children of which I am the youngest. My other siblings are from his other wives, including Zainub whom you already met. Unlike my mother and a lot of Saudi women, whose first priority is marriage, I decided that I would like to first complete my education. When I was a little girl I envied my brothers, who seemed to be allowed to roam around and live freely. I wanted nothing more than to be a boy. Why did girls have to stay at home most of the time? I decided that I wasn’t going to go that route. I was going to get educated first before I get married, so that I am not stuck in just one role.
